Friday July 27 Carbondale->Harrisburg Day 50

Left our funky hotel room with the proud distinction of having absolutely NOTHING that even came close to conforming to OSHA safety standards. It is amazing they are allowed to stay in business. They were doing some upgrades though. The proprietor was right out of a Hitchcock movie. As we walked out of the office to go see the room, Matt looks at me and said "now THAT is a character for a book". We bought some food at Shnucks (I'm not making that name up) grocery store, made dinner in the microwave, and ate outside on the picnic bench. Next morning we went and had breakfast at Mary Lou's. Nothing special but I did notice that about 4 different people in the place had this jumpy knee thing going on. What is that about anyway? I am feeling like I'm getting closer to trying some Biscuits WITH gravy..so far just biscuits plain.
We then took a short cut that we learned about from our previous Pets of the Week, David and Zach...who we haven't seen since. It saved us a day of riding and allowed us to arrive in Harrisburg, Illinois by 3:30pm, fix a flat tire, blog and check e-mail at the library, find a hotel, shower, watch the Cobert report (which we loved) and go out to dinner. We went to a mediocre Mexican restaurant (Solomon threw up later that night) where Matt and I had very strong Margaritas (the second one of my life) and we al sat around celebrating Shabbat by reading from our journals about the week that just passed. All-in-all it was a very special Shabbat (Solomon was fast asleep within 20 min. of barfing and fine the next day). It started raining hard about 10 min. after we go into the hotel room. We had been debating whether or not to camp out instead of another skanky hotel; where the smell of the disinfectant is so bad it makes you horrified to consider the smell it is trying to mask.
Tomorrow we go to Sebree, Ky where we will sleep in a Baptist church (first time for that).
I really have to go now.
Lots of love,
Djina

I was so glad to read your latest entries..that you are progressing and that you are definitely there. Silence always feels like a really empty space.

The cell phone guy-- entry --was almost priceless if it wasn't so pathetic. It is a fact, that people use their cell phone like a megaphone. They need to be sure we are all about their business. Now that exchange was Faulkner-esque. That exchange merits an entire play to be written surrounding that family. But if I saw it, I would think, now that's
taking dramatic license.

Now I need to talk about Ken. Who is this marvelous person, who brings you such treasures as well as himself? Who travels by plane, and carbon footprint to meet you and lift your spirits. Whoever this Ken is..I am wishing he could
duplicate himself. There should be a Ken on every corner.

By the way I said I would try and identify--gramps the bird..and I think I have. Itis a summer tanager. I say that from the red feathers and the rather larger beak, and that they are very common in Calfornia and the sowthwest..they winter in the tropics..maybe not this one..this one seems to like hangin at rest area and picnic groves.

Already in Kentucky. How incredible is that? Another thing that amazes me is that there are others out there who do this. A select few. A sole woman travelling from
Boston to Colorado. That has to be a Zen experience. There are all these zen folks travelling on two wheels...

Thanks for your wonderful diligence in keeping us so amused and informed. BTW we will be in California in later September..and plan to see you then. We'll drop by for some fresh whatever is growing at the moment. Love you guys, Yvette

Who is Ken? Ken is by turns the Pet of the Week (albeit for about 79 weeks now) and My Dad reincarnated. He is as amazing as he sounds and you will meet him when you come to visit. Interestingly enough, he said "man I love your Aunt!"
I think that bird IS a Tanniger.
Love you,
Djina
