July Friday the 13th cont.

What a beautiful day. It ended up being a sunny day with no wind. The flowers on the roadside smelled so good. Kansas is actually very beautiful, not just cornfields at all, also soy beans...not a soyburger or block of tofu to be found...but miles of soybeans. It is all rolling hills, lots of trees and flowers, birds....The sky is huge and there are an infinite variety of clouds in the sky at once. The people are so friendly. The cars all make lots of room or actually slow down, sometimes to a crawl, in order to pass you safely when there is a squeeze play going on between us, them, and the westbound traffic. The westbound cars all wave or give a quick toot on their horns. At first it took me by surprise. Going from Colorado drivers to Kansas drivers was like going from South Park to Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. In Colorado, if someone raised their hand as they passed you, it was to flip you off.
We are in the public park in Rush Center. There is no bathroom or shower but there is grass, a picnic table, two swings, little toads (don't worry the boys took lots of pictures), and a water pump with a hose attatched. I took a shower in my bathing suit with Matt spraying me down (don't worry, the boys took lots of pictures). Then Yonah decided he was too hot and sticky to be comfortable so I hosed him down too. Matt spotted our first firefly and it took us an hour to get Solomon back into bed. We had a very special Shabbat dinner. We had bummed some fuel off these two young guys who have a sag vehicle with a propane stove. We made Pasta with a powdered pesto sauce, chicken noodle soup, snow peas, sliced tomato, nachos, pretzels, and fig bars and tootsie rolls for desert. You just have to go with what's available. We got into town and the only grocery store was a gas station convenience store. We bought some bananas, muffins, and the one pint of milk they had left. Then we did our shabbat review of the week. It is amazing how much the boys remember; the names of the towns, things that happened, the names and descriptions of places we stayed..etc. It is also amazing how much happens in a week. I can't believe we are halfway to DC and we still haven't come across ONE Rotary Club breakfast, lunch, or dinner!
Love,
D
