Thursday August 16th Washington, DC

It is raining. We were surprised last night by our good friend Loni (real name, Jonathan Lewis), who took the train from NYC with his son, Yaniv, to see us and welcome us to DC. They are down at breakfast so I have hijacked his computer for some FREE wireless. There is a computer in the hotel but you have to pay by the MINUTE! I've never heard of such a thing. The nicer the hotel, the more they charge you for stuff. Anyhow, there is a library a block away so I can use the computer there too. We are also walking distance to the Mall and monuments, etc. and the Spy museum is across the street. The boys are still soaking up the fact that we made it and are in DC. Solomon said "I'm still trying to process that we finished....I'm still trying to process that Harry Potter is over....I'm still trying to process that I'm going to be in 4th grade." This morning he woke up and said "it seems like just a rest day...I'm can't really feel the difference of being done and just being on a rest day".
Yesterday was our last day and we were expecting an easy, low mileage day. We were off our maps and just winging it but we had the general route from Sharon's work on the Internet. Unfortunately we had to go off even that to find a place to sleep the night before (more on that later...THE SKANKIEST place yet...so bad that Yonah even took pictures!)
Anyhow, to make a long story short, instead of a 50 mile day we had an almost 90 mile day. We rode across the Memorial bridge just as it was getting dark, the Washington Monument was all lit up, the Lincoln Memorial was glowing, the Potomac was just sparkling...it was sooooo moving. Our total exhaustion added to the whole incredible feeling of having finally arrived at our destination, of having accomplished this amazing goal.
I'll write more on this later, as will Matt, and hopefully Yonah and Solomon.
Now, it is off to the Spy Museum.
Love,
Djina

Hi Solomon! Too bad we left the day you got there -- we wanted to congratulate you in person. Congratulations! We went to the Spy museum last year. It was great. This year our favorite place was the Capitol. There is great gelato in the Natural History Museum. From Eli

Hurray!!!!We're so happy for you and hope you are enjoying the feelings of accomplishment and success! (Sounds like a perfect arrival; I wish the city had been lit up with compact flourescents.) We're off to Lassen and we'll think of you while we're hiking with the kids up Brokeoff mountain!
Love, Teri

We've been visiting Eric's family, and we didn't have internet for a couple of days, and it was driving me nuts wanting to find out what happened.

We are so very happy for you. We've been telling everyone about you and your blogs. What an amazing family!!

Looking forward to seeing you back in Davis.

Hi guys,
I didn't expect to weep when reading your last post, but what you have accopmplished is just astounding; it's overwhelming, really. We're all so proud.
Enjoy your "day off", and all your days off hereafter! You made this summer one to remember for the many you have touched with your incredible spirit.
Yonah, kudos to you for taking on this journey; Djina and Matt, for supporting him so lovingly; and Solomon, for the jet packs (ie-comic relief) that thrust your family forward.
Blessings on you all.

Kol HaKavod to you all! I look forward to hearing all about it, Djina, on our next Calistoga getaway.
It looks like other people were emotionally moved by your success; I wasn't brought to tears, just so glad and relieved none of you were killed by a truck or psycho backwoodsman.
Elsa's favorite thing about DC was riding the subways, go figure.
Love, xxx, ooo,

How amazing! You get to Washington DC and there is an unusual weather storm that brings rain your 1st day.

The forcast looks sunny for the next few days except for a slim chance between 1-3 Friday afternoon per Weather.com

Enjoy! How exciting it must be! WOW!

Sasha says: Congratulations! It's amazing that you rode so many miles. I want to hear all the stories about everything that happened along the way, especially all the things you bulleted in that one post.

Ruth says: I am savoring the thought of your triumphant arrival and will write to the appropriate people rght now. Again, y'all are my heroes.

Daniel says: I'm amazed that you made it to Washington. Could Solomon come over some time when he gets back?

Thanks for taking the time to blog your trip so we could all ride along with you They were great! Your example and ride inspire us all and show Americans what we can do if we put our minds to it. You rode 3,800 miles, we can change a lightbulb or ride to work. I think my thighs got harder just reading about your rides.

Congratulations, amazing, and you did it and kept your good humour.

When you come back, be sure unwind and take an enjoyable ride along the bike path of the American River Parkway -- Sactown to Folsom. Flat and scenic and named after another trail blazer -- from the 1820's -- Jedediah Smith.

Mazal Tov! I am so happy for you. Great Job! I have loved reading about your adventures. I was on vacation for about 10 days and was determined to catch up when I came back. I am glad I did! You are the epitomy of Tikkun Olam.
