Thursday August 9th Wythville->Radford->Christiansburg

It is hot as...well, you know. It is about 100 degrees today and humid as..well, you know. I am in a bike shop in Radford that I will write about later because it is a good story but I only have a min. Got a new cyclometer.
The biking today was just beautiful...lots of hills, riding through these rural farm towns....just amazing.
I had a tinge of sadness this morning when I thought about how soon it will be over.
Gotta go.
More later.
Love,
Djina
ps As quickly as those garden Tchotchkys appeared, they disappeared.

Djina, It is 90+ with 40+ Humidity. You sure are in the heat wave! Good Luck! Swimming anyone?

Hurrah for new bike parts! The world in right again! Sorry, someday I will grow up, but the joy of new things one wants so badly could not be contained. What is the fun of growing up if you can't be a kid sometimes anyway? Enjoy!!!

Hi!
Sounds like your dream will soon be realized. Impressive, you are- the whole lot of you!
I was an undergrad in Blacksburg, VA many years ago- it's about about a 5 hour car ride to DC from where you are now. Beautiful country.
Can't wait to see you when you return. Matt's commute to Winters ought to be a walk in the park this fall.
Que les vayan bien en los ultimas dias!
Paz,
Laura

Last night as I was falling asleep
I thought about your journey. Almost like a montage, in which the summers' events both nationally and personally were thread together by the continuous movement of wheels and pedals straining but constant up hill and down, and across. The ride that cooled the planet..and made you hotter than hell. It is really hard to try and watch time, it is
so fungible..you dipped your back
wheels into the pacific in early June. The forseythia had just died back, the lilacs were goners, and the azaela were in profusion. You were pedalling away while the hostas were getting bigger and bigger, and the roses were in their finest hour, and then as you rode up those hills, the hydrangea opened and spread and still are, the heliposis, the black-eyed susans, and the lavender, the
beebalm the echinacea and just yesterday the hibiscus began its one a day cycle..one great big red bloom each day..till spent which should be next week some time. Three or four major dinner gatherings, a few brunches, some music conerts, and at the Towers, where I work, 25 couples took their marriage vows, a library dinner auction, which I helped plan as a trustee, a trip to the Berkshires, many pleasant breakfasts on the deck, lots of mornings weeding and clearing. Some great reads, one notable movie. That's been my summer..along with steam pipe breaks in New York City, a bridge down in Minneapolis, a tragic mine cave-in in Utah and Iraq. Well. what can we say. That's the bigger world. In the one we try and make for ourselves there is more peace and more sanity.

I hear you Djina when you say you had a tinge of sadness when you thought about the end of the run. Its been such a daily experience..hard and fun and hot and rainy, physically driving, but simple in its way. Survival at its most basic level.

But I know your astrology, and you have a positive spirit, so I suspect you are already also thinking of the lavender that is growing, and all your friends waiting for you and that brings me to my question.

Are you flying back to Davis? How long will you stay in Washington, once you arrive? By my calculations you may get there before the Aug 18 jamboree..so how is that going? As to weather..your are in the hot and humid zone, which we were experiencing for about a week up here in the northeast and how I hated it. My remedy. Sit under a fan and read
a good book..and move as little as possible. How weak am I? Today is in the 60s with a light rain and I am all smiles.
Stay safe and cool. Love Aunt Yvette

I am still with you and reading and enjoying your blog. I can't believe you are so close to finishing your ride. I will have to get the address for your friend's blog to start reading it. God bless!

I am curious. The humidity at night keeps climbing to 90+% on the east coast in a heat wave instead of falling during the night. Sounds awfully hot to me.

It seems like this kind of heat just does not cool down at night even when the temps drop which equals no relief. Am I getting this right? Is there a breeze such as our bay or delta breeze that cools the air to make it breathable?

The weekend is almost over..and no word..perhaps no computers in W.Virgina? Maybe just hills and
corn whiskey.
We miss hearing from you. Aignty Y.
